Recently, in a set of textbooks for primary school students, there was an article praising the quality of Mr. Truong Vinh Ky, causing much controversy. Notably, related to the above issue, after the social network shared a photo of the father's action when writing in his child's book with the content condemning and criticizing the act of "receiving elephants to their ancestors' graves". ” by Mr. Truong Vinh Ky made people stir even more, right at the time when the Ministry of Education and Training made an announcement about studying history for 10th grade and high school students.
Through this story, once again the historical theme flared up so strongly. From the above story to considering history as an elective subject, there has been a drastic reaction from the public about how to treat history. Because, if we worship before history, consider history not as important as things that can create jobs, money... Then the perceived value of history becomes increasingly blurred. Ultimately creating a generation of historical obscurity, a flare-up of revisionism that made us indistinguishable from it, and created a generation that idolizes historical figures but who are followers." semi-nationalism".
And the story related to Mr. Truong Vinh Ky is a sensitive issue, related to the above topic. To have this phenomenon, we need to go back in time, in 2015, the fact that Mr. Truong Vinh Ky was honored by a Cultural Fund as "an outstanding figure with meritorious services to Vietnamese culture" surprised many people. . Then there was an article affirming that Truong Vinh Ky was "a great teacher and cultural house of the nation"! So who is this honored person?
That was the person in March 1859, more than a month after the French occupied Gia Dinh citadel, before the country lost their home, the anti-colonial movement spread throughout the country, but they took the puzzling action of writing a letter to the French to asking for help: “Please don't hesitate any longer, extend your liberating hand to end our people's hardships” (Vu Ngu Chieu quotes Petrus Key's translation of Letters); then that spirit of "no hesitation" is expressed in detail by the act of being an interpreter for the French; and also take on the job of "insider" for the French as shown in the letter Truong Vinh Ky sent to P.Bert (P.Be): “I am also worried about contacting to provide you with key information useful value. I wholeheartedly endorse Mr. Pène (Pen)'s perfect project of pacification carried out by native actors and, here, I am closely following the king and the Privy Institute. May 10, 1886 ); "I will suppress all the pride and surround the king, I will find truly capable people for the Privy Institute" (Letter of June 17, 1886 )...
However, to evaluate the merits of Truong Vinh Ky, some people only base on the number of his works to conclude that he is "a pioneer in preparing for the cause of renovation", "a multi-faceted work". Such a form has great social effects. It helps our compatriots to overcome the gloom of a locked-down lifestyle, and to expand their understanding of nature and human understanding", regardless of the purpose of publishing these works.
Moreover, what do they do to prove that these books have helped the contemporary Vietnamese "surpass the gloom of a locked-down lifestyle, and expand their understanding of nature and human understanding"?
Maybe they don't know that Truong Vinh Ky himself said very clearly in his letter to "Members of the manuscript review committee" that: "The French, as owners, need to know Annamese to teach the Annamites to learn English. the ideas and concepts necessary for the reform and resurrection of the Annamites”; even without hesitation to call himself “a devoted and obedient servant”, affirming that “my heart has always belonged to France, and my small acts of service also belong to France” ( quote from the letter dated September 3, 1868 to the Director of Internal Affairs to request his resignation).
It is clear that many of Truong Vinh Ky's deeds are only to serve the interests of France, not to serve the country that gave birth to him, that is, he did not love his people to the point of being praised. His name as "the great teacher and cultural house of the nation" is not an insult to genuine Vietnamese people?
Recognizing the names of some historical figures by naming some schools, parks, and streets is an expression of the humanity of the national tradition. But not because of that, equating "public" and "crime", patriots and traitors, because that is disrespecting historical truth and causing the perception of the next generation to be negatively affected, leading to misperception and misunderstanding.
